COLLEGE HOCKEY RECRUITS - HOCKEY RECRUITS
College Hockey Recruits - Soo Minor Hockey Association. College Hockey Recruits
Fresher's Fair at Imperial College (incl. long description) For my friends in the U.S.: "Freshers" = freshman. Here's just one corner of the fair where hundreds of clubs try to recruit new members. They speak a different language in this country, so I don't even understand some of the names. I dunno what "Net Ball" is, but it looks like volleyball. The "Hockey" club is for field hockey - no ice here. We all know what Football club is for. But the "Table Football" club is for what we would call "foosball" (which couldn't possibly involve any drinking). There's a handful of stereotypically Britsh clubs like Cricket, Croquet, Rugby, Labour, Riding (horse), Snooker . Then there's the clubs you would expect at any school full of nerdy people (like me): Anime, bridge, "Internet & Gadget", origami, Sci-Fi. There's also the usual adventure sports, outdoor clubs, and social clubs for each nationality of international students (of which we have a gabillion). So where'd I go? There's an entire club devoted to Cheese. Melissa made me go get information from them. I thought she was joking at first, but oh no! She also made me go get information from the "Film Appreciation Society", which shows independent movies and foreign films that Melissa has heard of. Melissa and I were both huge fans of the "Fellwanderers", a group that organizes hikes of the countryside all around the UK. I also visit the alternative music society, which organizes club nights and gigs that we'd like to check out. Most importantly, there are no less than 5 clubs about "motoring". One of them is planning a trip to the World Rally Championship in Wales. Man, this is going to be easy. I thought I was going to put together a trip myself! There's also a club that has racing karts and organizes regular trips to a kart track. I told them I did rallycross back home and wanted practice. They said I'm allowed to get as sideways as I want. They also reminded me that it's always raining in this country, so they always race when it is wet and "slippy". TCF Bank Stadium Finally, the Gophers have their own field. Prior to 2009, they shared the Metrodome with the Minnesota Vikings and Twins (now the Twins have their own field which will open in the spring of 2010). The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers have not won the Big Ten in football since 1967, and has not won the title outright since 1941. Most of us here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes are hoping the new stadium will bring the excitement (and recruiting) back. TCF Bank Stadium has a capacity of 50,000, and is horseshoe-style. It is located on the campus, across the street from Mariucci Arena (hockey) and Williams Arena (basketball). Funding for the stadium cost approximately 289 million dollars.
